Nursing Students at Presbyterian University of East Africa in Kiambu Denied Nursing Council Indexing

Hundreds of nursing students at the Presbyterian University of East Africa in Kiambu find themselves in a precarious position due to a critical administrative failure.

In a shocking submission to cnyakundi.com, a source disclosed that over 500 nursing students at the institution have not been indexed by the Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) despite completing their studies.

Indexing by the NCK is a crucial step for nursing students as it validates their training and licensure thus allowing them to practice nursing anywhere in Kenya.

Reports indicate that the university has failed to facilitate the indexing process and left students in a state of limbo.

Students say that they have faced intimidation and threats of expulsion from the institution when attempting to address this critical issue.

The worst part about their frustrations is the fact that students have diligently fulfilled their financial obligations, including hefty tuition fees amounting to up to Ksh. 100,000 per year, as well as payment for the indexing process – which costs 10,000 Kenyan Shillings.

Despite the requirements set by the NCK for institutions to meet before indexing students the university has reportedly failed to comply with any of them.

It has come to light that the students were placed at an institution not recognized by the NCK by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS).

Repeated attempts by students, including strikes, boycotts and written appeals to the administration and the NCK have yielded no positive results.

As a result, many students find themselves in a state of despair, with some facing depression and even contemplating suicide due to the uncertainty surrounding their nursing careers.

“Some of the students are depressed and at risk of suicide,” the source revealed.
