The killings of Bart and Krista Halderson: The reason behind the crime, along with four additional significant facts regarding the murder of the Wisconsin couple.
1) Bart and Krista Halderson were last seen on July 1 and were reported missing a week later
According to reports, Bart and Krista Halderson, a working couple and parents of two, were last seen alive on July 1, 2021.
Their son, Chandler Halderson, reported them missing on July 7, informing the police that his parents had gone on a trip with a few friends to their family cabin over the Fourth of July weekend but never returned home.
As authorities commenced an investigation into their disappearance, they came across evidence suggesting that the couple might have been killed.
Chandler was arrested a few days later on unrelated charges and eventually charged with the murder of his parents.
In the subsequent days, law enforcement discovered dismembered remains of the couple scattered in remote locations.
2) Chandler’s girlfriend was able to provide the most significant clue in Bart and Krista Halderson’s case
Cathryn “Cat” Mellender, the girlfriend of Chandler Halderson, the younger son of the missing couple, cooperated with authorities by providing access to her phone data.
This cooperation proved crucial in the investigation as it led to a significant breakthrough in the case.
It is believed that Chandler had a history of infidelity, prompting Cat to use Snapchat to monitor his activities.
Based on a screenshot obtained from Cat’s phone, law enforcement learned that Chandler had been seen in a rural area close to the Wisconsin River early on July 3.
The Snapchat app placed him in that location around the same time his parents were reported missing.
Detectives subsequently searched the specified area and discovered the remains of Krista Halderson.
3) Bart Halderson’s remains were found on a farm located miles away from their house
According to sources, certain body parts of Bart Halderson, such as his torso, were found at a farm approximately 20 miles away from the family’s residence in Windsor, Wisconsin.
A witness at the farm reported to investigators that she had observed Chandler emerging from the wooded area of the farm, which is where Bart’s remains were ultimately discovered.
The cause of Bart’s death was determined to be at least two gunshot wounds to the back of his head.
4) Chandler Halderson was arrested and charged in Bart and Krista Halderson’s murders and dismemberment
Shortly after Chandler Halderson reported his parents missing, he was taken into custody on charges of providing false information to the police and obstructing an officer.
Eventually, he faced two counts of first-degree intentional homicide related to the deaths of his parents.
Law enforcement suspects that he murdered them sometime between July 1 and July 4.
Although the cause of Krista Halderson’s death remained undetermined, Bart Halderson was found to have died from gunshot wounds.
Forensic experts made a disturbing discovery at the family home: the fireplace contained over 200 bone fragments, including facial and knee bones, as well as fragments of human skulls. Additionally, police discovered evidence of blood within the house.
5) Authorities believed Chandler murdered his parents after they found out he was lying to them
During Chandler Halderson’s trial in January 2022, he was found guilty on two counts of first-degree intentional homicide, as well as charges of mutilating a corpse, hiding a corpse, and falsifying information about a missing person.
Subsequently, he received a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole.
Authorities suspected that he killed his parents, Bart and Krista Halderson, after they discovered his deception and lies.
According to reports, the 23-year-old had flunked out of college and had been dishonest with his parents about attending classes.
He even fabricated a job opportunity at SpaceX.
Furthermore, Chandler’s father had a meeting scheduled with college officials on the day of the murders, indicating potential tensions and conflicts within the family.
