Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, better known as Doja Cat, is a talented American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer.

During her teenage years, she started creating and sharing music on SoundCloud.

Her track “So High” caught the attention of Kemosabe and RCA Records, leading her to sign a joint record deal at just 17 years old.

Doja Cat gained widespread attention as an internet sensation when her 2018 single “Mooo!” went viral.

Over the course of her career, Doja Cat has amassed an impressive collection of accolades, including a Grammy Award out of eleven nominations, five Billboard Music Awards, five American Music Awards, and three MTV Video Music Awards.

Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini, born on October 21, 1995, hails from a family of artists and grew up in the Tarzana neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.

Doja Cat Father

Doja Cat’s father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a renowned performer of Zulu descent from South Africa.

He gained fame for his role as Crocodile in the original Broadway production of the popular musical “Sarafina!” as well as its 1992 film adaptation.

The 58-year-old star was born and raised in South Africa before relocating to the United States to pursue a career in the arts.

It was during his time in the US that he met Doja’s mother, and together they had two children.

Doja Cat had a brief relationship with her father after they met in New York City, where Dumisani was performing on Broadway.

However, due to his busy touring schedule, he wasn’t able to spend much time with Amala and her brother.

Dumisani disclosed that he had moved to South Africa from the US in an attempt to reunite with his family, but had done so out of homesickness.

Doja Cat, however, has asserted numerous times that she is alienated from her father since she “never met him.”

Her father refutes these allegations, asserting that he and his daughter have a “healthy” connection.

Dumisani proudly expresses his admiration for his daughter and frequently comments on her social media posts.

In an interview with TshisaLive, he enthusiastically spoke about Doja Cat, stating, ‘She’s a beautiful girl known as Doja Cat, singing alongside Nicki Minaj.

Doja finds it a bit peculiar that Dumisani actively comments on her posts, but she harbors no resentment toward him.

She believes that she inherited her talents from Dumisani and told XXL, ‘God bless him.

He’s incredibly talented. If I have even a fraction of his talent and dancing skills, I’m grateful.’

Doja Cat’s Mother

Her mother, Deborah Sawyer, is a Jewish-American graphic designer who met Doja’s father during his time in the United States, resulting in the birth of their two children.

Doja was primarily raised by her mother, and her musical style was influenced by the songs her mom used to play.

Doja mentions that it was surprising for her since Deborah is white, but she developed a love for hip-hop.

In an episode of The Hotbox, Doja shared, “I’m Jewish, my grandma’s Jewish, she’s white, and she never experienced music like that until she started meeting people and was like, wow I really love this.

Deborah played a significant role in inspiring Doja’s creativity.

After Doja Cat was born, she, along with her mother Deborah, and her brother Raman Dlamini, relocated from Tarzana to Rye, New York.

They lived there for five years with her maternal grandmother, who was a Jewish architect and painter.

When she was eight years old, she moved with her mother and brother to the Sai Anantam Ashram, a commune situated in the mountains of Santa Monica.

During her time there, which lasted four years, Doja embraced Hinduism and even wore head-covering scarves while singing bhajans at the temple.

However, she found the customs and traditions of Hinduism constricting, and despite her mother’s desire to raise her in that environment, she felt unable to fully enjoy her formative years.

Eventually, they returned to California, settling in Oak Park.

Deborah Sawyer recently filed for divorce from Dumisani Dlamini, stating that they were married on February 27, 1995, and separated on October 14, 1995.

She has siblings living in different cities, but she doesn’t have a personal connection with them.

Limited information is available about her siblings, except for her older brother named Raman Dlamini.

There is not much detailed information about him.

Doja has mentioned that both she and her brother have faced instances of harsh racism since they were among the few mixed-race children in their local area.

Despite this, Doja appreciates the small family unit she grew up with.

In an interview with The Fader, she expressed, ‘Having both parents in your life and all your siblings where everyone loves each other, that’s always great. But sometimes, things aren’t like that.'”

Family Members

Rye, New York, was where her maternal grandmother formerly resided.

She is a Jewish architect and painter by trade.

In order to prepare for her audition for Central Los Angeles Area New High School #9, a performing arts high school in Los Angeles, Cat’s aunt, a vocal coach, had taught her how to sing.

Since she hasn’t disclosed anything else to the public, there aren’t many further specifics regarding her family.
