If it’s not misdiagnosis, these facilities are inducing expecting mothers before due date to force a C-section which isn’t covered by the National insurance.
“My wife was induced 7 days before her due date in one of the private hospital in Kamakis, they also have a branch in Ruai and Kahawa. She insisted I take her their during her pregnancy period. We were forced to have a C-section and pay in cash. They charged me ks101,000”

According to Dr Abdi Mohammed, the Chair Kenya Association of Private Hospitals, they cannot accept the heavily reduced rates that the national fund has imposed on them.
According to Dr Abdi most private facilities will be reimbursed only Sh20,000 for a caesarean section.
“This is way below the professional fees recommended by the Kenya Medical Practitioners and Dentists Council. For the caesarian section, an obstetrician is supposed to charge Sh96,000 or maximum Sh180,000 then you have charges for the hospital but NHIF wants to pay Sh20,000 for everything,” Dr Abdi said.
While speaking to local media, the NHIF chairman Lewis Nguyai says they held talks with private facilities in January and are still open to more negotiations before new rates take effect.
“There has been to and fro and everybody will use their own negotiating tactics. We always endeavour to ensure that we put 100 percent public participation,” he said.
According to reports from the ministry of health, NHIF has over 10million principal members.
Early this year, then health CS Kagwe said claims by contracted facilities jumped from Sh19.7 billion in the financial year 2015/2016 to Sh54.6 billion in the financial year 2020/2021.
