Kenyans write to NIS over systemic discrimination and harassment at the British Council

In a letter addressed to Major General Philip Wachira Kameru and copied to different govt agencies, Kenyans working at the British Council have expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which their employer is treating them.

“We write to express our grave concern on systemic discrimination and harassment experienced by Kenyans working at the British Council in Kenya, which we believe needs to be urgently addressed”, the letter seen by which was copied to PS Ministry of Interior Karanja Kibicho, Commissioner General of KRA James Mburu, PS National Treasury Dr Julius Muia, and most importantly LPS Labour Ministry Peter K. Tum and PS Foreign Affairs Ministry Amb Kamau Macharia.

We write to express our grave concern on systemic discrimination and harassment experienced by Kenyans working at the British Council in Kenya, which we believe needs to be urgently addressed.

While this has been an enduring concern over the past seven or so years, the situation has deteriorated in the last three years. Despite this concern being raised with different teachers of the organization at both regional and global levels, no decisive action has been taken. This has caused untold suffering and misery to many Kenyans serving within the organisation.

This letter, penned by a select number of both former and current employees of the British Council in Nairobi, seeks the intervention of the Government of Kenya to address the plight of present and future employees of the organization. Some respondents have opted to remain anonymous as they are still under the employ of the British Council and fear victimization.

All the incidents captured below are factual, and we are available to confirm our statements with the National Intelligence Service, should the need arise.

A select profile of employee experiences are as below:

  1. Repeatedly abusing and continues to use organisation systems and processes to bully, threaten and discriminate Kenyans and ensure justice is accorded to the victim
  2. Ensure that moving forward the Country Director’s position in British Council Kenya is, performed by a Kenyan as seen in other British Council offices such as Ethiopia
  3. Investigate the tax stats of the British Council in Kenya and how the organisation has abused its rather dated Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of Kenya to evade paying taxes on income-generating activities such as exams and teaching, for many years.
  4. Guarantee protection, safety, and justice of Kenyans who have shared their stories and are part of the team raising concern through this letter.
