President Uhuru Kenyatta has called for the creation of a joint European Union and Africa Covid-19 response strategy. He said that union should explore the possibilities of cancelling debts owed by African countries.
Kenyatta was addressing European and African leaders on the proposed establishment of the Africa-Mediterranean-Europe (AME) Foundation when he spoke.
The president said that setting up set of AME Foundation is to create a platform for development and interactions between Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe.
The creation of the foundation is led by the Former President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker.
Head of states who attended the virtual meeting supported Kenyatta’s proposal to create the foundation arguing that it will help in inject fresh ideas needed to scale up collaboration in the regions.
“I, therefore, welcome with enthusiasm the proposal to establish the Africa-Med-Europe (AME) Foundation. The Foundation will complement the existing Africa-European continental cooperation in addressing the emerging global challenges,” Kenyatta said.
President KenyattaUhuru also supported the proposal that aims to include the creation of the EMA Foundation as an agenda during the next AU-EU summit scheduled for October this year.
“I concur with the idea that the next Africa Union-European Union Summit can present an excellent opportunity and platform to call for the establishment and support for the Africa-Med-Europe Foundation,” Kenyatta added.
Senegal’s Sall also supported the establishment of the EMA Foundation saying the institution will help in addressing some of the changes being witnessed in Africa.
President’s call as the numbers of positive covid-19 case rise to 11,673 after the country registered 461 more today.
The new cases have emerged from 3,895 samples that country tested in the last 24 hours, Health CS Mutahi Kagwe said.
