Disgruntled staff at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) have raised attention over the recent issuance of two “disfavourable” directives which specifically target employees in the nursing department.
In a circulating internal memo dated 17th October 2022, the hospital’s Director of Nursing Services Mr Edwards S Omondi stated that members of the nursing staff are not entitled to a public holiday if the said national event falls on their days off.
“No Public Holiday (PH) shall be awarded if a holiday falls on your day off,” the letter notes in part.
Mr Omondi also clarified that following consultations with the Director of Human Resources, it was decided that new moms will no longer be exempt from night shift duties effective next month.
“KUTRRH congratulates new mothers and welcomes them back to the team after maternity leave.
Please note that it is not a KUTRRH HR policy to exempt lactating mothers from night shift.
Therefore, necessary adjustments on this effect shall be done on rotas effective November 1, 2022,” the letter adds.
A disappointed nurse who reached out to cnyakundi.com described the new orders as “heartbreaking” and a “great infringement of their rights”.
“Hi Nyakundi, please highlight this.
This is not right at all, something must be done,” the source wrote.
