The Latest Covid Wave in China: Projections Suggest 65 Million Infections per Week

The Latest Covid Wave in China is disturbing many. Find out more on this article.

China is preparing for a potential surge of Covid cases, with projections estimating up to 65 million infections per week by the end of June.

Despite previously strict measures, including lockdowns and mask mandates, the response to the latest omicron variant, XBB, appears subdued.

Public sentiment has shifted, with a decreased sense of alarm compared to previous waves.

Qi Zhang, a finance worker in Tianjin, shared that people now perceive the situation as less severe.

Respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan disclosed alarming data during a medical conference in Guangzhou.

He predicted that China’s new wave of Covid infections, which began in April, could reach a staggering 40 million cases per week.

By the end of June, the peak is expected to reach 65 million weekly infections.

To put it in perspective, the United States reported over 5 million cases per week at its peak in January.

However, China has stopped providing regular case updates, making it challenging to ascertain the true scale of the current outbreak.

The U.S. State Department is in discussions with allies regarding China’s second wave of Covid.

Travel restrictions are not confirmed yet, but the situation is being monitored by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The U.S. remains committed to collaboration with China on global health matters.

In the U.S., various versions of the omicron subvariants, including XBB 1.5, have been circulating since December, with hospitalizations and deaths declining.

During China’s first omicron wave, hospitals were overwhelmed, and about 80% of the population was infected.

Vaccines targeting XBB subvariants have received preliminary approval in China.

While the current wave in China may not reach the magnitude of cases seen in December and January, there is still concern for older individuals and those with underlying health conditions.

These vulnerable groups have lower vaccination rates and remain at high risk of developing severe illness, according to Jin Dong-yan, a virologist from the University of Hong Kong.
