Roger Thomas  Early Life

Roger Thomas Staubach entered the world on February 5, 1942, in Cincinnati, Ohio.

He was the solitary offspring of Elizabeth and Robert Staubach.

His upbringing took place in Silverton, a northeastern enclave of Cincinnati.

In 1960, he completed his education at Purcell High School (now Purcell Marian High School), a Catholic institution located in Cincinnati.

Staubach College Career

In 1961, Staubach commenced his collegiate journey at the U.S. Naval Academy, following a year at the New Mexico Military Institute.

He assumed the role of quarterback for the Navy Midshipmen football team and made his inaugural appearance in 1962 during his second year as a midshipman (sophomore), in the third game of the season against the University of Minnesota.

Although they faced a 21-0 defeat against Minnesota, Staubach took over from the starting quarterback, Ron Klemick, during the game.

A few weeks later, Staubach had the opportunity to start in the renowned Army-Navy game, graced by the presence of President John F. Kennedy, who conducted the coin toss.

Staubach led his team to a triumphant 31-14 victory over Army in this historic match.

Staubach’s college career maintained a strong trajectory.

In his third-class (junior) season in 1963, he steered the Midshipmen to a remarkable No. 2 national ranking.

This achievement came despite their New Year’s Day loss to the top-ranked University of Texas in the 1964 Cotton Bowl.

Throughout his junior year, Staubach garnered extensive acclaim and accolades, securing the Heisman Trophy, Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Memorial Trophy.

His accomplishments even landed him on the cover of Time Magazine in October 1963.

Over the course of his three seasons at Navy, Staubach completed 292 of 463 passes, resulting in 18 touchdowns and 19 interceptions.

Notably, he set a school record at the time with 4,253 yards of total offense.

His excellence earned him a place in the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

And in 2007, ESPN recognized him as the No. 9 player on their “Top 25 Players in College Football History” list.

Roger Staubach Military Service

During his junior year at the Naval Academy, Staubach received a diagnosis of color blindness.

Consequently, he was commissioned directly into the Supply Corps, a role that did not require him to differentiate between red and green lights.

Following his graduation from the Naval Academy in June 1965, he made the voluntary decision to serve a one-year tour of duty in Vietnam.

He concluded the remaining portion of his naval career in the United States, where he honed his football skills by participating in various service teams in preparation for a future NFL career.

Staubach Professional Career

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Staubach in the 1964 NFL Draft as a tenth-round “future” selection.,

However, he didn’t play professionally until 1969 after completing a four-year military commitment, debuting at 27.

He became the full-time quarterback for the Cowboys in the 1971 season, leading them to ten consecutive victories and their first Super Bowl win in January 1972.

After this successful season, Staubach negotiated his own contract, earning about $75,000 a year for three years.

In the 1972 season, he temporarily left due to a separated shoulder.

But made a remarkable return during a playoff game, securing a win with two late touchdown passes.

He continued as the starting quarterback, guiding the Cowboys to their second Super Bowl win in 1977.

In his 11-year NFL career he had impressive stats and 20 concussions.

Staubach retired in 1979 due to health concerns and left football in March 1980.

Business Ventures

In 1977, Staubach embarked on his entrepreneurial journey by establishing The Staubach Company, a commercial real estate firm.

This was in partnership with Robert Holloway Jr. Prior to this venture.

He had gained experience in the real estate sector, working with the Henry S. Miller Company during his off-seasons from 1970 to 1977.

In 1982, he acquired full ownership of the company by buying out Holloway.

The Staubach Company has forged partnerships with major corporations such as AT&T, McDonald’s, K Mart Corporation, and the Hospital Corporation of America.

Additionally, it has ownership interests in numerous projects, including 27 different apartment complexes in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

After retiring from professional sports, Staubach dedicated his efforts to The Staubach Company.

Serving as its chairman and CEO until his announcement of stepping down on June 20, 2007.

On July 11, 2008, Jones Lang LaSalle acquired The Staubach Company for a substantial $613 million.

Beyond his real estate endeavors, Staubach ventured into other projects, including co-owning Hall of Fame Racing, a NASCAR Nextel Cup Series Team, along with fellow former Cowboy Troy Aikman, which made its racing debut in the 2006 season.
