Kenyans especially in rural areas and urban slums are adamant and want a good life, complete with glittery things that they think that M-Kopa, Stratimes and Sunking are their friends.
The tri-axis of evil and conglomerates have preyed on the less fortunate to saddle them with debt to death.
A 24-inch TV that sells for between Sh9500 and Sh30,000 on platforms such as Jumia is given on loan for a deposit of between Sh5-Sh7k, then the buyer from M-Kopa, Startimes and Sunking is told to sign up for and pay between Sh100 and Sh120 per day for about 600 – 700 days.
In other words, you pay for a 24-inch TV between 65k to 77k.
The illusion of cheap for glittery things
The trap is paying little by little, it is a psychological tact that’s meant to create an illusion of affordability when in the real sense it is not.
Since rural folk want to have a TV and lights so badly, they’re forced into these traps.
There is no difference between these “hire purchase” solar companies that rip off rural folk and digital lenders like Okash, Opesa, Tala et al.
Then there’s something they call “run-time”. Your TV can only run for a number of hours per day, e.g., 12 or 8 hours. When you use the lights, the run time goes down.
The lights are dim and are not favourable for studying. Kids literally struggle to read using these lights. If in the next 5 or so years, the country registers an increase in eye problems, you know where the problem originated from.
When these TVs get dysfunctional, and you take them to the same tri-axis of evil for repair, they tell you it cannot be repaired or the model is no longer available.
They ask you to get a new one. This means the cycle starts afresh. M-kopa is known to do this.

The country needs regulations to deal with these thieves and conmen taking advantage of unsuspecting rural folk who can barely read.
