Sadly, like many big cities around the world, Nairobi is no stranger to police harassment and brutality, and quite often, the excessive force leads to the loss of lives.
Most memorably, during the first few days of Kenya’s dusk-to-dawn curfew, imposed on March 2020, the cops, without apparent justification, shot and beat people at markets or returning home from work, even before the daily start of the curfew, like an event they had been eagerly waiting for.
They also broke into homes and shops, extorted money from residents and some even looted food in locations across the country.
