Shockingly, Dexter Scott King is dead.
Dexter Scott King, the younger son of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, has passed away following a battle with prostate cancer.
Serving as chairperson at The King Center in Atlanta, the 62-year-old civil rights leader’s son died peacefully at his California home.
Named after the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where his father once served, Dexter King, the third of four children, was just seven years old when his father was assassinated in 1968.
His wife, Leah Weber King, announced his peaceful passing in sleep.

As an adult, Dexter King pursued a career in law, dedicated to safeguarding his father’s legacy and the King family’s intellectual property.
Besides chairing the King Center, he also held the position of president of the King estate.
Following Coretta Scott King’s death in 2006 and the passing of the Kings’ eldest child, Yolanda King, in 2007, Dexter’s younger sister, Bernice A King, expressed deep sorrow over losing another sibling.
Martin Luther King III, Dexter’s older brother, described the sudden shock as devastating, acknowledging the difficulty in finding the right words and requesting prayers for the entire King family.
