Sonny & Cher were an American pop and entertainment duo in the 1960s and 1970s, made up of spouses Sonny Bono and Cher. The couple started their career in the mid-1960s as R&B backing singers for record producer Phil Spector.
They first achieved fame with two hit songs in 1965, “Baby Don’t Go” and “I Got You Babe”. Signing with Atco/Atlantic Records, they released three studio albums in the late 1960s, as well as the soundtrack recordings for two unsuccessful movies, Good Times and Chastity, with Cher contributing vocals to one cut, “Chastity’s Song (Band of Thieves)”.
In 1971, they launched their own variety show, The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour, which became a huge success. The show ran for five seasons and won three Emmy Awards.
The couple divorced in 1975, but they continued to work together on their show and on other projects. They officially disbanded in 1977.
Sonny & Cher was one of the most popular and successful pop duos of all time. They sold over 40 million records worldwide and won numerous awards, including two Grammy Awards. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
Sonny Bono died in a skiing accident in 1998. Cher continued to pursue an iconic couple. She has won an Academy Award, a Grammy Award, and an Emmy Award. She is one of the most successful female entertainers of all time.
