Anthony Martial Injury Update: When Will the Man United Striker Return?
Anthony Martial is one of the key players for Manchester United, but he has been sidelined with a
hamstring injury since June.
The French striker missed the final games of last season, including the Emirates FA Cup final, and has
not featured in any of the pre-season friendlies so far.
Fans are eager to know when he will be back in action and how he will fit into Erik ten Hag’s plans.
Anthony Martial’s Injury History and Recovery
Anthony Martial suffered a hamstring injury during the FA Cup final against Chelsea on June 18, 2023.
He was forced to leave the pitch in the 64th minute, as United lost 2-1 to the Blues.
The injury also ruled him out of France’s Euro 2023 campaign, where they reached the semi-finals.
Martial has been working hard to recover from his injury, but he has not been able to join the team training yet.
He stayed behind in Manchester while his teammates traveled to the United States for their pre-season tour.
During a press conference in San Diego on Monday, July 24, 2023, manager Erik ten Hag gave an update
on Martial’s condition. He said:
- “Today he was in the team training, so that is hopeful. And, yeah, of course, when you have a player in a squad you expect that he is available and then the players have to take the responsibility to be available. But when he’s not I have to deal with the situation and we show that we also can be successful without that striker. But yeah, of course, it’s easier when you have that striker in your team because I think every club who wins big trophies has scoring abilities in that team.”
Ten Hag also expressed his hope that Martial can stay fit this season and help the team achieve their goals. He said:
- “We need a good squad and Anthony Martial is a brilliant football player and so he will help us. He scored goals and also in other areas of football like pressing, in possession, combinations, he’s a great player and, yeah, let’s hope he will be fit and he stays fit.”
Anthony Martial’s Role and Future at Man United
Anthony Martial is a versatile forward who can play as a central striker or on the wings.

He has been at Man United since 2015, when he joined from Monaco for £36 million.
He has made 229 appearances for the club, scoring 78 goals and providing 50 assists.

Martial had a good season under Ten Hag in 2022/23, scoring 19 goals and assisting 12 in all competitions.
He formed a formidable partnership with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford in attack, as United
finished second in the Premier League and reached the FA Cup final.
However, Martial also faced some challenges and criticisms last season.
He struggled with injuries and inconsistency at times and was often benched or substituted by Ten Hag.
He also had to compete with Edinson Cavani and Mason Greenwood for a starting spot.
Martial’s future
Martial’s future at Man United has been subject to speculation this summer, as the club is looking for a
new striker in the transfer market.
They have been linked with Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, who scored 27 goals in Serie A last season.
Martial has also been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with Everton reportedly interested in
signing him.
However, Ten Hag has insisted that Martial is part of his plans for the season and that he values his
quality and contribution.
Martial still has two years left on his contract with Man United, with an option to extend for another year.
He is reportedly earning £250,000 per week at the club.4
