The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) is seeking charges against Uasin Gishu Senator Jackson Mandago in connection with the Finland scholarship saga.
EACC CEO Confirms Approval from DPP
EACC CEO Twalib Mbarak has confirmed that the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) has given the green light to charge Senator Mandago.
Speaking at a public engagement forum in Murang’a County ahead of International Day on December 9, Mbarak stated that the commission has gathered evidence against the former governor.
Investigation into Sh1.1 Billion Scholarship Program
EACC has been probing the Sh1.1 billion scholarship program initiated by the Uasin Gishu County government during Mandago’s tenure.
Funds collected from parents for the scholarship program, aimed at sending students to Finland and Canada, are under scrutiny.
Details of Overseas Education Trust Fund Transactions
The Uasin Gishu Overseas Education Trust Fund account, opened in May 2021, allegedly received Sh837,855,889 from over 200 students between May 2021 and December 2022.
Records indicate that funds intended for learning institutions, such as Tampere University and JAMK University, may not have been fully disbursed.
Students’ Financial Contributions and Alleged Non-Receipt by Universities
Students reportedly contributed Sh1.19 million for school fees, Sh100,000 for air tickets, Sh80,000 for accommodation, and Sh30,000 for insurance.
Some universities claim not to have received the required funds, putting students at risk of deportation.
Reports suggest that one university has terminated its agreement with the Uasin Gishu County government amid financial discrepancies.
