Samuel Okemwa, whose hard-hitting opinion videos on Facebook Kenyans love to watch has been arrested by Tanzania authorities.
Okemwa was on his way to Arusha when he was stopped by Tanzania immigration officials at the Namanga border, his passport confiscated.
“He was allegedly arrested for filming the officials”, a source told Cnyakundi.com
Okemwa was said to be on his way to hold an exclusive interview with Tanzania gospel singer Rose Muhando.
Arrests of Kenyan scribes
This is a second time a Kenyan journalist is arrested by a neighbouring country in a matter of months.
Kenyan journalist Yasin Juma, was arrested in Ethiopia in early July and still remains in custody to date.
The former NTV Journalist was arrested while covering protests that erupted in Ethiopia’s Oromia region following the death of musician Hachalu Hundessa.
Hundessa who was perceived as an activist for the Oromo ethnic group was shot dead while driving in Adis Ababa on Monday leading to the unrest that has so far claimed hundreds of lives.
Other reports indicate that Yassin Juma was arrested because of his close relationship with the controversial musician, one of few people who have openly criticised Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government.
Kenyans and international human rights activists have called for the release of Yasin Juma.
It remains to be seen how Okemwa’s story will unfold.
