Where Tigers Live

Tigers  inhabit forested environments and can adapt to swamps, grasslands, and rainforests.

Wild tigers, across different subspecies, ranged from modern-day Turkey to the eastern coast of China’s Sea of Japan.

And reached as far north as Russia and as far south as Bali and Indonesia.

Today, their range has diminished to just 6% of that territory.

These remote tigers thrive in the snowy taiga and boreal forests.

Bengal tigers, or Indian tigers, represent the most numerous tiger species.

They dominate the Indian landscape, with an estimated 3,500 wild specimens in the country.

The South China tiger, critically endangered, resides in central and eastern China.

Malayan and Indo-Chinese tigers were once considered distinct species until recently.

In 1998, an estimated 1,000 individuals existed, but current figures are less available.

They inhabit Cambodia, Laos, Burma, Thailand, and Vietnam.

Sumatran tigers, exclusive to Sumatra, are critically endangered.

They boast the darkest coat among tiger species and are the smallest.

Approximately 500 Sumatran tigers remain in the wild.
