Jarrett Allen : From High School Hoops to NBA Glory

Jarrett Allen, born on April 21, 1998, plays pro basketball for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA.

He went to college at Texas Longhorns and was picked 22nd overall by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2017 NBA draft.

Allen started high school at Round Rock High School in Round Rock, Texas, attending for his freshman year.

He later switched to St. Stephen’s Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, where he spent his last three years, securing two SPC championships.

Allen participated in the 2016 McDonald’s All-American Boys Game.

He chose to play college basketball at the University of Texas at Austin.

He earned a five-star recruit rating and was recognized as the 15th overall player in the Class of 2016.

College Career

During his freshman year at the University of Texas, Allen maintained an average of 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game.

However, Texas had a disappointing 11–22 finish.

His best game occurred when he delivered a 22-point, 19-rebound performance in a 12-point loss to Kansas.

Following the season, he entered the 2017 NBA draft but initially refrained from hiring an agent before ultimately deciding to forgo his remaining three years of collegiate eligibility.

Professional Career

Brooklyn Nets (2017–2021)

The Brooklyn Nets drafted Allen with the 22nd overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft, and he signed his rookie deal on July 20.

At 19 years and 182 days, he became the second-youngest player to debut for the Nets, scoring nine points, grabbing two rebounds, and blocking a shot on October 20.

On January 25, 2018, Allen joined the starting lineup, achieving a career-high 16 points and 12 rebounds in a win over the Philadelphia 76ers.

He continued with notable performances, including a career-high 20 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on February 2 and a career-high 14 rebounds with 13 points against the Detroit Pistons on February 7.

On March 21, 2018, he matched his career-high with four blocks in a game against the Charlotte Hornets, and on April 5, he set a new career-high with five blocks in a victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

In 2018, Allen recorded a career-high 24 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on November 17.

He also contributed with a season-high 14 rebounds and 13 points in a win against the Miami Heat on November 20.

On January 16, 2019, he recorded 20 points and a career-high 24 rebounds in the Nets’ 145–142 overtime victory over the Houston Rockets.

Cleveland Cavaliers (2021–present)

On January 14, 2021, Allen got traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a deal involving multiple teams.

This happened because the Rockets sent James Harden to the Nets.

Then, on July 23, 2021, Cleveland made an offer to keep Allen by making him a restricted free agent.

Allen agreed and signed a new contract on August 6, 2021.

In a game on October 20, 2021, Allen did something amazing.

He became the first player since 1954 to score 10 or more shots without missing in the season’s first game.

During the 2021-22 season, Allen played really well.

He started in all 56 games and had career-best stats, averaging 16.1 points, 10.8 rebounds, and making significant contributions in each game.

Teaming up with a new player named Evan Mobley, Allen helped turn the Cavaliers into a much better team.

They went from being not so good to having a winning record and a strong defense., in March, Allen got hurt with a fractured finger, and the team’s performance dipped a bit.

On December 28, 2023, Allen had an awesome game, scoring 24 points, grabbing 23 rebounds, and making significant contributions in a game against the Dallas Mavericks.

The next day, he played well again, scoring 30 points and making contributions, but the Cavaliers lost to the Milwaukee Bucks.
