Matthew Macfadyen was born on October 17, 1974, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

His parents were Meinir, a drama teacher and former actress, and Martin, an oil executive.

Because of his father’s job, Macfadyen spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, before returning to England and attending schools in Louth, Lincolnshire, and Scotland.
