Early Life and Education

Matthew Macfadyen was born on October 17, 1974, in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.

His parents were Meinir, a drama teacher and former actress, and Martin, an oil executive.

Because of his father’s job, Macfadyen spent part of his childhood in Indonesia, before returning to England and attending schools in Louth, Lincolnshire, and Scotland.

He developed a passion for acting at a young age and was inspired by the film Fanny and Alexander, directed by Ingmar Bergman.

He then decided to pursue a career in acting and was accepted to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) at 17, where he studied from 1992 to 1995.

Stage Career

After graduating from RADA, Macfadyen excelled with Cheek by Jowl, showcasing his versatility in classic plays like “The Duchess of Malfi” and “Much Ado About Nothing.”

Noteworthy performances extended to the Royal National Theatre, where he played Prince Hal in “Henry IV, Parts One and Two.”

In 2007, he starred in Bruce Norris’s dark comedy “The Pain and the Itch,” delivering a praised performance as Clay, a liberal and wealthy father facing a family crisis.

His standout performance came in Criminal Justice, a BBC crime drama, where he portrayed Joe Miller and won the BAFTA Television Award for Best Actor in 2010.

In film, Macfadyen’s breakthrough came with his portrayal of Mr. Darcy in Joe Wright’s Pride & Prejudice (2005).

Macfadyen is married to Keeley Hawes, an actress who he met on the set of Spooks in 2002.

They have two children, a son named Ralph and a daughter named Mabel.

Macfadyen is also a stepfather to Hawes’ son, Myles, from her previous marriage.

The couple lives in London and are active supporters of various charities, such as UNICEF and the Alzheimer’s Society.
