Sage Steele was born in 1972 in the Panama Canal Zone to an American Army family.
She has two brothers, Courtney and Chad, the latter serving as senior vice president of media relations for the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens.
The Steele family moved frequently due to the U.S. Army’s assignments, living in various states and countries.
In 1984, they settled in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Sage attended Thomas B. Doherty High School for two years before relocating to Carmel, Indiana, for her senior year at Carmel High School, where she graduated in 1990.
She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sports communication from Indiana University Bloomington in 1995.
In 2015, she had the honor of being the commencement speaker at Indiana University’s undergraduate commencement, a milestone in her career.
Why did Sage Steele leave ESPN
On August 15, 2023, Sage Steele announced her departure from ESPN after 16 years, following a free speech lawsuit resolution.
She shared her decision via X, formerly Twitter, stating, “I’ve settled my case with ESPN/Disney and am leaving to fully exercise my First Amendment rights.”
Expressing gratitude for her 16-year journey, she expressed excitement for what’s next.
Sage Steele had been outspoken on global issues and was suspended by ESPN for discussing the Covid-19 vaccine mandate and former President Barack Obama’s race in 2021.
Subsequently, she sued ESPN and its parent company, The Walt Disney Company, alleging violations of her free speech rights.
In June 2023, Disney proposed a settlement of $501,000, and Sage Steele accepted it.
ESPN confirmed her departure, saying, “ESPN and Sage Steele have mutually agreed to part ways, acknowledging her significant contributions over the years.”
