Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja
Tension is rife in the Nairobi County Assembly after some members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) accused Governor Johnson Sakaja of betraying the party and favouring their rivals from the Azimio wing.
During a media briefing on Tuesday, Assembly Minority Leader Anthony Kiragu, who led the charge against the Governor, challenged him to take a clear stand and stop playing both sides.
“Governor Sakaja must not play the role of a chameleon, switching between a yellow t-shirt during the day and a blue one at night. It’s time for him to declare his true allegiance,” Kiragu said, referring to the colours of the UDA and Azimio parties.
The divide between the Governor and the minority Kenya Kwanza MCAs, who have taken on the opposition role, began when Sakaja appointed Azimio la Umoja allies into key county positions.
However, the Governor defended his actions, claiming he received approval from President William Ruto, his party leader, before making the decision.
Despite the Governor’s justification, the UDA members remain steadfast in their belief that they have been sidelined and betrayed by Sakaja’s actions.
As the rift deepens, it remains to be seen how the situation will be resolved and what impact it will have on the County Assembly.
