Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega are set to star in Death of a Unicorn, a new movie from A24 that has been given special permission to keep filming during the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
Death of a Unicorn Plot and Cast
Death of a Unicorn is described as a dark comedy that follows a father and daughter who run over a unicorn on their way home.
The film is written and directed by Jeff Baena, who previously collaborated with A24 on The Little Hours and Horse Girl.
Paul Rudd will play the father, while Jenna Ortega will play the daughter. The rest of the cast has not been announced yet.
The film is expected to start shooting soon in Hungary.
Death of a Unicorn Filming During the Strike
Death of a Unicorn is one of the 39 independent projects that have been approved by SAG-AFTRA to resume or continue production during the strike, which began on Thursday, July 13, 2023.
The strike affects the major studios and streaming services that are represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP).
The independent projects that have been granted waivers are not affiliated with the AMPTP and have agreed to abide by the terms of the latest offer submitted by SAG-AFTRA during contract negotiations.
The union said that these projects are not in violation of the strike order and that members are encouraged to work on them.
Some of the other projects that have been approved include Mother Mary, another A24 film starring Anne Hathaway, Hunter Schafer, and Michaela Coel; The Rivals of Amziah King, starring Matthew McConaughey; and The Dust Bunny, a horror film that reunites Hannibal’s Mads Mikkelsen with show creator Bryan Fuller.
