Bernard Nierow, born in Brooklyn, New York, began formal piano instruction at the age of seven under Frederick Bried.
Before the age of 14, he was accepted into the High School of Music & Art in New York City and received a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music.
His instructor and teacher, Constance Keene, once stated in a Keyboard Classics article that “Vladimir Horowitz was Peter’s greatest fan!” In 1956, he earned his degree from Brooklyn College.
Nero, under the name Bernie Nerow, showcased his technical mastery of jazz with his debut album released in July 1957 on the Mode label.
In 1961, he released an album that won him the Best New Artist Grammy.
Throughout his career, he recorded 67 albums, won another Grammy, and received 10 more nominations.
During his early partnership with RCA Victor, Nero produced 23 albums in just eight years.
After switching to Columbia Records, he released the album and song “Summer of ’42,” which sold one million copies.
From 1979 to 2013, Nero served as the founding music director of Peter Nero and the Philly Pops.
