Sophie Morgan is a British television presenter, artist, and disability rights activist.

She is best known for hosting Channel 4’s coverage of the Paralympic Games, as well as presenting documentaries such as The World’s Worst Place to Be Disabled? and Me, My Mouth and I.

But behind her successful career lies a tragic story of how a car crash left her paralyzed from the chest down when she was just 18 years old.

The Night That Changed Everything

On August 15, 2003, Sophie Morgan was celebrating her A-level results with her boyfriend and friends.

She had just returned from traveling for a few months and was looking forward to starting university in London.

was wearing a black dress that showed off her tan and long blonde hair.

decided to drive her friends home after a party, even though she had only passed her test six months earlier.

She was sober, but she was driving too fast on an unlit country road. She lost control of the car, which swerved and flipped over.

Her skull was cracked open, her right eye was dislodged, her cheek and nose were crushed, her jaw was broken and her collar bone was snapped.

But the worst injury was to her spine, which was fractured at the T6 level, severing her spinal cord and leaving her paralyzed from the ribs down.

spent six weeks in intensive care, where she underwent several surgeries and had to be fed through a tube.

then spent another six months in a spinal unit, where she learned how to use a wheelchair and cope with her new reality.

She said: “I used to call my car crash an ‘accident’, as I believed I had simply made a very unlucky, albeit relatively common, mistake.

I thought my inexperience meant that what happened was just one of those things.

But now I’ve learned that every year, thousands of other young people die or sustain life-changing injuries on the road.”

The Road to Recovery

Sophie Morgan did not let her injury stop her from pursuing her dreams.

She went on to study art at Goldsmiths College in London, where she graduated with a first-class degree.

also became involved in various campaigns and charities that aim to raise awareness and improve the lives of people with disabilities.

She said: “Having been so close to death just a few months prior to this and just starting out on my journey adapting to my paralysis, this was a monumental, transformative, liberating experience that – as Dad knew it would – changed my perceptions about what a disabled woman like me could do.

I knew then that even though I was paralyzed from the chest down, so long as I could find the right vehicle – and the right attitude – I could still feel free!!”

She credits her father as one of her biggest inspirations and supporters.

He encouraged her to travel to Canada soon after leaving the hospital, where she rode a snowmobile across a frozen lake at 60mph.

He also helped her get a pair of robotic legs called Rex, which allow her to stand and walk with crutches.

She said: “He always motivates me.

He’s always been there for me, pushing me to do things that scare me or challenge me.

He’s always been, my role model.”

The Rise to Fame

Sophie Morgan started her media career in 2006 when she appeared in the BBC Two documentary Beyond Boundaries, which followed a group of disabled people on a trek across Nicaragua.

She then became a presenter for Channel 4’s That Paralympic Show, which showcased various Paralympic sports and athletes.

She also hosted several documentaries that explored the issues faced by disabled people around the world, such as discrimination, poverty, violence, and lack of access.

Some of these include The World’s Worst Place to Be Disabled?,

which exposed the shocking conditions of disabled people in Ghana; Me, My Mouth, and I,

which followed her journey to get Botox injections in her vocal cords to improve her speech;

and License to Kill, which investigated the causes and consequences of road accidents involving young drivers.

She said: “I want to use my platform to make a difference.

I want to challenge stereotypes and prejudices about disability. I want to show people that disability is not a tragedy or a burden, but a part of human diversity.”

She has also been involved in various campaigns and initiatives that aim to promote disability rights and inclusion,

such as Scope’s End the Awkward campaign, which encouraged people to have more positive interactions with disabled people; Models of Diversity,

which advocated for more representation of disabled models in the fashion industry;

and the Global Disability Innovation Hub, which supported innovation and technology for disability.

She said: “I believe that disability is a social issue, not a medical one.

It’s not about what’s wrong with our bodies, but what’s wrong with the society that excludes us.

We need to change the attitudes, the policies, and the environments that create barriers for us.”

The Crufts Presenter

Sophie Morgan is currently presenting the world’s largest dog show, Crufts,

which is taking place from March 10 to March 13 at the NEC in Birmingham.

She is joined by fellow presenters Clare Balding, Alan Carr, and Radzi Chinyanganya.

She said: “I’m so excited to be part of Crufts. I love dogs and I think they are amazing companions for disabled people.

They can provide emotional support, physical assistance, and unconditional love. They can also help break down barriers and start conversations with strangers.”

She has a pet dog of her own, a cockapoo named Lola, who she calls her “best friend”.

She said: “Lola is my constant companion.

makes me laugh, she comforts me when I’m sad, she cuddles me when I’m cold.

She’s always there for me, no matter what.”

also hopes to inspire other disabled people to pursue their passions and achieve their goals.

She said: “I want to show people that disability is not a limitation, but an opportunity.

You can do anything you set your mind to, as long as you have the courage, the determination, and the support.

You can be whoever you want to be.”
