One of Igboho’s legal representatives, Yomi Alliyu, revealed this information during an interview with BBC Yoruba.
He emphasized that the rights activist fell ill while in detention in Benin Republic’s prison.
Alliyu further verified that Sunday Igboho is currently in critical condition and has been swiftly taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The Beninese Government has released Sunday Igboho, the Yoruba Nation activist, from custody, but it’s essential to emphasize that his release was specifically for health reasons.
The International Criminal Police Organisation detained him when he was initially arrested on July 19, 2021, at Cadjèhoun Airport in Cotonou, Benin, while he was on his way to Germany.
His legal counsel, Mr. Yomi Alliyu, SAN, clarified that Igboho’s release was temporary and intended to facilitate his access to medical treatment in a Beninese hospital.
Alliyu emphasized that Igboho’s release was granted based on health grounds, as his health condition required immediate attention.
Benin officials refrained from providing an immediate comment on Igboho’s case.
In a video shared on social media, Igboho expressed gratitude to Benin President Patrice Talon, a former Nigerian president, and Nobel prize winner Wole Soyinka for their support.
Although he appeared to be in a residential home, he did not disclose his specific location.
In his message, Igboho urged the political class and the people of Yorubaland to unite and work together to elevate the Yoruba people, saying, “Let’s join our hands to make Yoruba great.”
