The Outsiders Full Movie

The Outsiders was adapted into a movie in 1983, directed by Francis Ford Coppola.

The Outsiders Author

S.E. Hinton was only 15 years old when she started writing The Outsiders, and 18 when it was published.

Her own experiences and observations of the social divisions in her high school inspired her.

She also chose to use her initials instead of her full name, Susan Eloise, to avoid being dismissed as a female writer in a male-dominated genre.

The Novel

The Outsiders novel is divided into 12 chapters, each narrated by Ponyboy Curtis.

It begins with Ponyboy being attacked by a group of Socs, who are the rich and privileged kids in town.

His older brothers, Darry and Sodapop, and his friends, who are all Greasers, the poor and rebellious kids save him.

The novel follows the events that lead to a violent confrontation between the Greasers and the Socs and the consequences that follow.

The novel ends with Ponyboy writing his story as an assignment for his English class.

The Outsiders Characters

The Outsiders novel has many memorable characters, each with their personality and backstory.

Some of the main characters are:

Ponyboy Curtis: The protagonist and narrator of the novel. He is a smart and sensitive Greaser, who loves reading and watching movies. He is often conflicted between his loyalty to his friends and his desire for a better life.
Johnny Cade: Ponyboy’s best friend and the youngest of the Greasers. His parents’ abuse has led him to be shy. He is the hero of the novel, as he saves Ponyboy from drowning and kills a Soc in self-defence.
Dallas Winston: The toughest and most dangerous of the Greasers. He is cold and cynical and has a criminal record. He is loyal to his friends and helps Ponyboy and Johnny escape after the murder. He dies by the police after robbing a store.
Sodapop Curtis: Ponyboy’s older brother and the middle child of the Curtis family. He is handsome and charming and works at a gas station. He is optimistic and cheerful and tries to keep the peace between Darry and Ponyboy.
Darrel Curtis: Ponyboy’s oldest brother and the guardian of the Curtis family. He is strong and responsible and works as a roofer. He is strict and harsh with Ponyboy but loves him deeply. He is a former football star, who gave up his dreams for his brothers.
Cherry Valance: A beautiful and popular Soc girl, who befriends Ponyboy and Johnny. She is kind and understanding and acts as a spy for the Greasers. She is the girlfriend of Bob Sheldon, the Soc whom Johnny kills.
