The Lancaster County District Attorney’s Office announced that a man from Lancaster has been sentenced to life in prison plus 20 years for intentionally setting his family’s home on fire and killing his wife in 2010.
Carlos Montalvo-Rivera, 53, was convicted of first-degree murder in April this year in relation to the death of his wife, Olga Sanchez-Reyes, who tragically lost her life in the fire that occurred at their Dauphin Street residence on December 6, 2010.
Following a three-week trial, Montalvo-Rivera was also found guilty of arson, risking a catastrophe, and three counts of attempted homicide.

Lancaster County Judge Dennis Reinaker ordered mandatory life imprisonment for first-degree homicide, along with an additional 20 to 40 years, as announced by the prosecutors.

The charges against Montalvo-Rivera for Sanchez-Reyes’ murder were filed in 2019 after an extensive nine-year investigation.
During the sentencing, Judge Reinaker addressed Montalvo-Rivera, stating, “The story you fabricated and clung onto simply lacked credibility.
The jury did not believe you, and rightfully so.” Montalvo-Rivera had claimed that intruders had broken into his home, killed his wife, and set the house on fire in retaliation for his wife’s brother cooperating with the DEA in an unrelated case.
The prosecution presented several inconsistencies and inaccuracies during the trial, including the fact that a family member testified to hearing Montalvo-Rivera express a desire to “kill his wife like a dog” following an argument, contradicting his claim of a happy marriage.
Additionally, the defendant allegedly encountered someone he believed was having an affair with his wife on the night of the murder and fire.
However, there were no indications of brain or head injuries from a CT scan, and Montalvo-Rivera’s carbon monoxide levels suggested he was not present in the home during the fire.
Moreover, evidence revealed that the window Montalvo-Rivera claimed to have jumped from was closed, and he was observed attempting to open it during the fire.
The prosecution also demonstrated that Montalvo-Rivera could have easily bound his own hands, refuting his claim of being tied up by intruders.
The defense argued that the prosecution had delayed and refrained from taking action from 2011 to 2019, suggesting a lack of thorough investigation.
However, the jury did not find these arguments convincing.
Judge Reinaker praised the work of Assistant District Attorneys Christine Wilson and Jennifer Ponessa, as well as former Lancaster City Bureau of Police Detective Nathan Nickel, for their efforts in the case.
The nine-year investigation led to charges being filed in 2019 by Detective Nickel, according to the prosecutors.

The jury agreed with the prosecution’s narrative that Montalvo-Rivera killed his wife, poured gasoline in the victim’s bedroom and up the stairs, set the house on fire while his children were on the third floor, escaped through a first-floor door, tied himself up, and attempted to construct a false story to cover his tracks and proclaim his innocence.
Wilson concluded by stating, “Justice may have been delayed, but the victim’s family has finally received it.”
