Who Is Sam Francis?
Samuel Lewis Francis, a famous American painter, and printmaker in San Mateo, California.
He learned art at the California School of Fine Arts (now called the San Francisco Art Institute) from 1942 to 1946.
In 1944, Francis began his artistic journey after being diagnosed with spinal tuberculosis from a U.S. Army Air Corps accident.
He got ideas from artists like Paul Klee, Henri Matisse, and Jackson Pollock, and then developed his unique style with bright colors, expressive brushwork, and emotional forms.
In 1950, he held his first solo show at the Ferus Gallery in Los Angeles. He gained recognition in the “New American Painting” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1958.
From 1959 to 1966, Francis lived and worked in Paris, where he was influenced by French painter Nicolas de Staël.
During this time, his paintings showed big abstract shapes and a more subtle color palette.
He returned to the United States in 1966, settling in Santa Monica, California, where he continued creating and showing his art until his death on November 4, 1994.
