Diego Carlos Injury Update: When Will the Aston Villa Defender Return?
is one of Aston Villa’s key players, but he has been sidelined since August with a serious injury.
The Brazilian centre-back ruptured his Achilles tendon in the win over Everton and had to undergo surgery.
He is expected to be out for several months, leaving Villa with a big gap in their defence.
Here is the latest update on his injury and his possible return date.
How did Diego Carlos get injured?
Diego Carlos joined Aston Villa from Sevilla in the summer for £26m, becoming their most expensive signing of the window.
He quickly established himself as a leader and a vice-captain, forming a solid partnership with Tyrone Mings at the back.
He also impressed with his passing, tackling and aerial ability.
However, his promising start was cut short by a freak injury in the second game of the season against Everton.
He landed awkwardly after challenging for a header and felt a sharp pain in his left ankle.
He was stretchered off and taken to hospital, where an MRI scan confirmed the worst: he had ruptured his Achilles tendon.
How long will Diego Carlos be out for?
Diego Carlos had surgery to repair his tendon and started his rehabilitation programme.
He has been wearing a protective boot and using crutches to support his weight.
He has also been doing some exercises to keep his muscles active and prevent stiffness.
The typical recovery time for an Achilles rupture is between six and nine months,
depending on the severity of the injury and the individual’s healing process.
Some players have returned sooner, while others have taken longer.
For example, Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk was out for seven months with a similar injury last season,
while Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi missed 10 months in 2019.2
Based on this, Diego Carlos is unlikely to play again this year.
He might be able to return in early 2023, but he will need to regain his fitness,
strength and confidence before he can compete at the highest level again.
How is Diego Carlos coping with his injury?
Diego Carlos has been positive and upbeat about his injury recovery.
He has thanked his fans, teammates and staff for their support and prayers.
He has also shared some updates on his social media accounts,
showing his progress and his determination to come back stronger.
He recently flew out to the Middle East with the first team ahead of the Premier League’s return on Boxing Day.
The break for the World Cup has given him valuable time to step up his recovery and train with the squad.
He posted a photo of himself on Instagram with the caption: “Feeling good! Working hard every day!”
He also received a visit from his former Sevilla teammate Lucas Ocampos, who is recovering from a knee injury himself.
The two friends posed for a picture together and wished each other well.
Who is replacing Diego Carlos in Aston Villa’s defence?
Diego Carlos’ injury has left Aston Villa with only three fit and experienced centre-backs: Tyrone Mings,
Ezri Konsa and Calum Chambers. Kortney Hause has also returned from a long-term knee injury,
but he is not fully match-fit yet.
Steven Gerrard has mostly opted for a back four of Matty Cash, Konsa, Mings and Matt Targett in Carlos’ absence.
Chambers has also filled in at centre-back or right-back when needed.
The Villa manager has praised his defenders for their performances and their adaptability.
However, he has also admitted that he would like to sign another centre-back before the close of the transfer window in January.
He said: “You can never say never but we have to wait and see.
We also have to wait and see what the outcome is of Diego Carlos’ injury.
I’m extremely worried about that situation.”
Some of the names that have been linked with Villa are Juventus’ Merih Demiral,
Celtic’s Kristoffer Ajer and Brighton’s Ben White.
