The Major Investigation Team of the local police spent months assembling the case, collecting crucial evidence, interviewing numerous witnesses, analyzing extensive CCTV footage, and conducting forensic examinations.

The victim, 16-year-old Brianna Ghey, lost her life on Saturday, February 11, following a brutal attack in Culcheth Linear Park, Warrington.

The court learned that the girl had formed a friendship with Brianna prior to the attack, spending considerable time persuading her to meet in Culcheth with the boy that day.

At 1:53 pm, they encountered Brianna at a bus stop on Warrington Road and proceeded to Culcheth Linear Park.

Unbeknownst to Brianna, this was all part of a meticulously planned scheme to end her life.

Brianna Ghey was lured

They lured Brianna deep into the park before committing the heinous act.

However, their actions were interrupted by two vigilant dog walkers who sensed something amiss, prompting the culprits to hastily flee the scene together.

Brianna’s lifeless body was discovered by the dog walkers, who promptly reported the incident to the police at 3:13 pm. Officers arrived at the scene just 12 minutes later, determining that Brianna had suffered multiple stab wounds. Despite efforts by emergency services to revive her with CPR, Brianna was declared dead by paramedics at 4:02 pm.

Brianna had been stabbed 28 times

The court heard that Brianna had been stabbed 28 times, predominantly in her neck, chest, and back.

A murder investigation ensued, leading to the swift identification of the two teens as suspects, thanks to eyewitness accounts following a widespread media appeal.

The pair was arrested 24 hours after the incident and subsequently charged with Brianna’s murder.

A handwritten note

Searches at the defendants’ residences uncovered a handwritten note outlining their plan to kill Brianna in the girl’s bedroom.

A hunting knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was recovered from the boy’s bedroom, containing traces of Brianna’s blood.

Additionally, thousands of deleted text messages between the defendants were restored, revealing their sadistic fantasies and prior attempts on Brianna’s life.

During the trial, it was disclosed that the defendants had shared their sinister plans for months before the attack, discussing various ways to harm multiple children, including Brianna.

Despite vehement denials during initial interviews, the pair was found guilty of murder on December 20 after a nearly four-week trial.

Detective Inspector Nige Parr of the Major Investigation Team, and Senior Investigating Officer for Operation Moment, commented on the outcome.

“Today, two teenagers have been found guilty of Brianna’s murder. I hope this result brings about some closure for Brianna’s family and helps them as they try and rebuild their lives.

“Brianna did not deserve her fate. She was targeted because she was different, and betrayed by someone she thought was a friend, and for her to have lost her life as a result of their senseless actions is tragic in every sense of the word.

The impact of Brianna’s death

“The impact of Brianna’s death was not only felt deeply amongst those who knew and loved her. It’s fair to say that her untimely passing has left many across the country – especially those from the LGBT community – overwhelmed with grief.

“This was an extremely complex investigation with many challenges – including the ages of those involved and the circumstances surrounding Brianna’s death – and I would like to thank all those involved for their efforts.

“Thankfully, today’s outcome shows my team’s work was not in vain, and I hope they can walk away from this case in the knowledge that they have brought about whatever justice was possible for Brianna, whose life was cruelly cut short.

“Our thoughts remain with Brianna’s family and friends as they continue to come to terms with their devastating loss.”
