Super-annoying Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has been caught in between the selections of University of Nairobi Vice-Chancellor.
Sources within the inner circles revealed that Matiang’i is pushing for the appointment of the acting VC Prof. Isaac Mbeche to head the institution as the VC.
Prof. Mbeche was appointed back in July after UoN council rubbished the then VC Prof. Peter Mbithi to be reappointed as the VC for the second time.
In a message to UoN students and staff, council chair Julia Ojiambo reassured the UoN community that they have dealt with the issue and there is no cause for alarm.
“The Council wishes to take this opportunity to reassure the University of Nairobi community and all Stakeholders that it is in charge and there is no cause for alarm,” read her message.
Before his appointment as the acting VC, Prof Mbeche was acting deputy vice-chancellor in charge of finance, planning and development department.
And now, it is alleged that Matiang’i has been holding several meetings with Kisii professionals in a bid to secure a smooth appointment of Prof. Mbeche as the new UoN VC.
In one of the ways arrived at was that of the retirement age, Matiang’i and his ‘people’ are stipulating a public university VC should retire at the age of 70 years.
In the newly advertisement for UoN Vice-Chancellor, the retirement age was changed from 70 years to 75 years to accommodate Prof Mbeche who is 69 years old.
Shame! Shame! Shame!
