The Rot In Kenyan Hospitals

Twitter user Owaahh has Tuesday gone to Twitter to reveal screenshots of nurses and CEO allegedly from Nairobi Women’s Hospital – Nakuru Branch.

According to the Twitter user, the hospitals test patients as commodities to be fleeced; where nurses and doctors are forced to make maximum profits from a single patient.

The tactic includes:

  1. Putting more patients in wards.
  2. Delaying discharge of patients.
  3. ‘arresting’ patients with minor issues to visit labs, do tests that are irrelevant so as to maximize profits.

Of course, not all people, even in the most cruel of world’s will support evil. Some of the staff are clearly not for the idea and face the ‘wrath of capitalism’ at the hospital.

The first to be covered here as stated before is Nairobi Women’s Hospital, Nakuru Branch.

Medics are not supposed to behave like this.

Here are the explainations and screenshots from Owaahh’s account. Read for yourself.

Start

First on the chopping board is Nairobi Women’s hospital. These screenshots are from a Whatsapp group for the Nakuru branch staff, and they read, someone said earlier today, like the hospital is a trading floor.

1. Lock discharges.

2. In this one, the COO Eunice Munyingi tells someone that s/he is discharging patients too fast, and it is “not sustainable.”

3. In addition to keeping tabs on how many patients are in the hospital, Nairobi Women’s also keeps tabs on social media mentions (so I’m sure they can see this thread).

4. Felix Wanjala is the CEO of Nairobi Women’s.

In this one he is giving his team a target to achieve in two hours.

5. None of the screenshots include any discussions about clinical issues. It would make sense if this was a group with just the business side of the hospital, but it includes everyone.

In this one, the COO Eunice Munyingi tells someone that her planned discharges are too many.

6. In this one, the CEO and COO are hounding someone (presumably a doctor called Victoria) about why she discharged more patients than planned.

7. The thing goes on in these ones. In this one, Victoria is telling Atemi to revoke five planned discharges, not because of clinical issues, but because of business.

We are commodities to these guys, and it’s not just Nairobi Women’s. All of them bar none.

8. The CEO, in this one, is telling his team to hit these daily revenue targets. They do this by admitting you when you don’t need to be admitted, sending you to the lab when it’s not necessary, and other hacks that ultimately cost you money and do not improve your health.

9. Here, the discussion is about a patient who had clearly figured out their corporate greed and put it in a group on Facebook.
