Cnyakundi.com has learnt that Mr. Marete who is the head of Patmol Security Company is a rogue manager who threatens to shoot staff who he mistreats and fires.
“The director fires security guards without pay, you insist to get paid and he threatens to shoot u dead”, a source said.
Apart from slave-driving Patmol is also accused of not remitting statutory deductions.
“The guy deducts NHIF and NSSF money without sending the money to the authorities, we ask why and he says there is nowhere we can take him. He goes ahead to abuse us, he loves to use the term ‘kuma ya mama zetu’..”, the source added.
Guards work hard but they are exploited by their employers who make a lot of money from contracts and then pay them peanuts.
It has been many months since even their Union – Kenya National Private Security Workers Union (KNPSWU) has been in talks with various stakeholders to solve this crisis and improve their lives but it seems is that the man at that helm of KNPSWU, Mr Issac Andabwa has been pocketed.
In October 2019, the National Assembly committee on delegated legislation heard that rogue security firms earn as much as Ksh50,000 per guard every month but only pay them a meager salary of Sh8,000. The rest, the companies argued are used to cater for logistics.
That time, Interior Principal Secretary (PS) Karanja Kibicho termed the move unfair labour practice, which will be addressed by the Private Security (General) Regulations, 2019 coming into effect on January 5, 2020.
“We have responsibilities to look at both the interests of the guards and the employer. It is not fair that the consumers pay Sh50,000 but guards only get Sh5,000 from the companies,” Kibicho said.
The committee of parliament on delegated legislation looking into this led by Uasin Gishu women representative Gladys Boss Sholei were told that there were over 200 cases of pregnant guards as at October 2019, who were dismissed the moment the firms learnt they were expectant.
“Private security is about the guard. Employers only think about their profits and nothing to do with the person who stays in the sun and cold night,” Andabwa said.
