The government has been criticised for not doing enough to shield Kenyans from the impact, effects of/and the coronavirus pandemic.
Public defender Jerotich Seii, supported by educator and public intellectual Dr Wandia Njoya are calling on the government of Kenya (GoK) to convene a board team which will handle the Coronavirus pandemic issues within the next 24 hours or they will convene one of like-minded Kenyans.
“Dear President Uhuru Kenyatta: We respectfully request that you convene a broad team within the next 24hrs. If you are unable, I will convene one with like minded WaKenya. Hunger knows no shame”, Ms Seii wrote.
After economist Dr. David Ndii has posted his open letter to President Uhuru Kenyatta, Dr Wandia Njoya replied asking that Jerotich Seii, medical Lecturer Lukoye Atwoli and ecologist Mordecai Ogada take up the task and implement David Ndii’s and Jerotich Seii’s suggestion on how to deal with the pandemic.
“My suggestion still stands. Let’s have a quartet of you, Jerotich Seii, Lukoye Atwoli and Mordecai Ogada, take over the response. (The) cabinet is moribund, the provincial administration is dumb, politicians are chaotic and indisciplined and the president is clueless. They can’t implement this”, Wandia wrote.
Dr Njoya went further to propose that the emergency response plan shared by Jerotich Seii and the economic plan penned by Dr David Ndii are good suggestions that can form an advisory board such as the one formed by four Tunisians during the upheavals in that country.
The Tunisian Quartet or the Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet comprising of a group of four civil society organizations that were central mediators in the effort to consolidate democratic gains and to form a lasting constitutional settlement in Tunisia following the unrest and historic regime change of the 2011 Jasmine Revolution which spurred the Arab Spring.
The group which did a good job in that country went on to win the 2015 Nobel Prize for peace.
The Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet showed how a country can come out of a crisis. The country was at the brink of a civil war in 2013 when the group was formed.
Though Kenya is not at the brink of a similar social upheaval, the danger posed by the Covid-19 pandemic all over the world is real and might in some insane instance make things spin out of control as poor masses spill into the streets looking for food and medicine.
Ms Njoya intimates truly that the GoK has forgotten Humanity in the face of calamity and thus it needs to regain it, even as it holds press conferences to update Kenyans about the coronavirus.
“The point of such pressers is for civil servants to say to themselves “don’t call us, at least we’ve done something.” It’s not about us, it’s about them and their KPIs. But it’s also about something else: the idea that machines and money equal people’s lives. There’s another element of GoK pressers: the emphasis on law and order and the lecturing of Kenyans like we’re stupid and GoK knows best, but like typical natives, we’re refusing to follow instructions that we don’t know are good for us. This is why Jerotich Seii emphasized that the most important element of an emergency response is HUMANITY. In other words, we want to know from MoH 1. where we get tested 2. where we get food and supplies 3. how we manage economic activities. Instead, we’re told kits and labs”, she wrote

As the government gags bloggers who are exposing the truth about its orders being followed or not instead of communicating well, it remains to be seen how the disease will turn out in the coming weeks as we’ve been warned severally without care for the small changes which need to be undertaken.
