Our desk has received damning revelations of lack of proper hygiene and sanitation at Riara Road Primary School situated on Ngong Road.
Over the past weeks, several pupils have been taken ill complaining of stomach problems.
Most showed signs of diarrhea and food poisoning. The strange thing is that this is caused by food that is outsourced from outside caterers.
Despite the efforts of parents asking the management to address the issue, their pleas have fallen on deaf ears.
The management has not given them an answer or even showed concern to what is happening at the school.
Parents are tired of the numerous trips they have to make to the hospitals; mind you, healthcare in Kenya doesn’t come cheap.
The school is under the Riara Group of Schools which is owned by Eddah Wacheke Gachukia.
Some 3 questions:
- Why can’t the management hold the catering company accountable?,
- Who is benefiting?
- Who is the owner of the catering company
Below is the information we received from one of the parents.
Hello Cyprian,
There seems to be a serious hygiene issue at Riara Road Primary School with outbreak of diarrhea and stomach aches from kids. The parents have complained repeatedly but no reasonable response from management. Please support with highlighting this plight
We have repeatedly complained to no end and the school management has failed to confirm certified health inspection. Food preparation is outsourced however toilets are constantly dirty with no water as the borehole is not working.
In addition, no water for washing hands. This is not acceptable for a school where we cough up to Kshs. 80,000 per term per child on tuition fees only.
Happy to share and link you with class representatives.
Just visit any hospitals along Upper Hill and Ngong Road areas, they will tell you they have attended to many sick kids from this school on the same.
Please highlight our plight urgently.
Happy to share evidence on ongoing chats in school and class WhatsApp groups.
This is serious please highlight
Please hide my identity as I have a child there and wouldn’t want her victimized.
Here some photos, not in any particular order, showing parents discussing the issue:
