Since the start of the pandemic, greedy school heads have defied Education ministry guidelines on fees and imposed illegal levies on parents.
The extra charges come as families continue to feel the pinch of paying fees after every two months under the current crash study programme up to the end of the year.
They disguise the illegal extra levies in discrete forms to avoid education officials’ detection.
Over the past two years, this blog has consistently covered endless complaints from disturbed guardians exposing rogue learning institutions that have taken advantage of the tough times to mint some quick, easy money.
A parent with their child enrolled at Rockfield’s Junior Academy forwarded the detailed submission shared below that illustrates how the school’s administration has been swindling them through exorbitant transport fees.
“Hey, Nyakundi,
Please hide my ID.
I am a parent at Rockfield Junior school and would like to raise concern over what is a total rip off to parents during these harsh economic times.
Have you noticed how some schools are overcharging us post COVID?
A year used to be 3 terms.
Nowadays we have 2 months’ terms.
School fees have remained the same.
So assuming you used to pay 20k for 3 months, you are now paying 20k for 2 months.
That aside, noting that the syllabus has to be covered within a shorter time, other fees have remained the same.
For example, Rockfield Junior previously charged Sh7,500 as transport for 3 months, now it’s Sh8k and covering only 2 months,
It is actually less given holidays and midterms.
Assuming 10 terms until the end of this year, the school will have overcharged 25k per child.
Do the maths for clubs, lunch, etc.
It’s a ripoff!
Please highlight this plight.
We are suffering as parents and when you complain your child gets victimised,” the source writes.
