Times have become increasingly hard since the pandemic struck in 2020.
A private investigator shares an old con trick which is becoming the norm again in Nairobi.
In Nairobi, single ladies or mothers that post themselves on dating sites have become easy prey to con artists and fraudsters.
They ride on desperation and ignorance of the women, and a lot of women have both traits. – Private Investigator
The developing trend is that a con artist will identify a lady, mostly a single mother, that is desperate for money.
‘Nitumie 2k urgently,’ a common trait that Kenyan ladies often have after meeting a new man will then put her squarely on the con artist’s crosshairs.
The con artist will send the money, ask the lady out for weeks and then drop a business idea.
The business idea involved depositing checks in their account or accounts as part of some business payments.
The con artist will convince the lady to open a company account, where it is easy to deposit forged checks. It is only after police come knocking that the lady comes to learn it was a fraud. It is then too late.
Bank staff are involved, and police are also involved. Even in the cover-up of the real culprit.
How can a bank clear a fraudulent check? Where is the due diligence?
The bank must also be liable, and pay for the monies lost. (there’s a precedence to this)
Moving on, when the police come knocking, the con artist will collude with them to fix the lady as he/she buys time outside.
The con artist will always have several godfathers at the highest level of government be it in police, etc, and it will be hard to catch them.
The con artist will also operate behind multiple mobile phone numbers.
When the case is brought to court, the con artist’s godfathers and police all collude to make it difficult to release the suspect and the cover-up continues.
If you are stuck in such a case. If you know such a con artist.
