There’s employee mistreatment at Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI)- Wellcome Trust Research Programme (KWTRP) in Kilifi.
KEMRI-Wellcome Trust engages in Medical Research on Vaccines, Global Epidemiology, Genomics, Health Systems, & Clinical Care.
According to their website, they conduct integrated epidemiological, social, laboratory and clinical research in parallel, with results feeding into local and international health policy. Their research platforms include state-of-the-art laboratories, a demographic surveillance system covering a quarter of a million residents, partnership with Kilifi County Hospital in health care and hospital surveillance, a clinical trials facility, a vibrant community engagement programme and a dedicated training facility.
We received a complaint, as shown below, of mistreatment and labour malpractices:
Mr Nyakundi,
Things are not so welcome at Wellcome Trust, a medical research firm with is its country headquarters in Kilifi and allied to KEMRI.
In March 2016 the Union of National Research and Allied Institutes Staff of Kenya (UNRISK) moved to court and sued KEMRI and Wellcome trust Case number118 of 2016 at the labour relations court in Mombasa with 9 items being in dispute http://kenyalaw.org/caselaw/cases/view/149064 .
The orders were given to backdate allowances owed to employees from up to 2011. The parties appealed and lost the case and orders were again given
The most irritating thing is that KEMRI being the parent partner and a category PC-4A in parastatal rankings has since implemented the orders whilst its London based Wellcome trust has failed to honor the judgment and even being sued for contempt of court for failing to implement the various Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) items and backdating of allowances.
It’s such impunity that foreign based organizations operate in Kenya underpaying their staff against the constitutional requirement of fair remuneration.
Attached are documents of the cases, awards and what KEMRI has implemented. Highlight this case
