A group of American activists have launched a petition asking the federal government to request Congress to act on the issue of free speech that has lately been under threat on many online platforms.
The activists explain how the free and open internet has been turned into a controlled place with many sites like Twitter and Facebook censoring content and banning users as a way of removing “unwelcome” opinions and thereby undermining the value of free speech.
Recently we’ve seen many social media users permanently banned from Twitter including one of Kenya’s most influential bloggers Mr Cyprian Nyakundi. A clear sign that the online space is being monopolized.
The group has requested the President of the United States to ask Congress to pass a legislation that prohibits social media platforms from banning users. They maintain that users have the power to choose what they want to see or not and that Mark Zuckerberg or Jack Dorsey shouldn’t be doing it on their behalf.
