Freedom of speech is very expensive. You can’t afford it no matter how rich or well connected you are. The internet is becoming very powerful in shaping societies. People get news on social media, Jobs and even marketers are flocking social media because of the unhidden and huge potential it has.
But, not everyone is happy with its growth. Evils are being exposed and people are losing their respect and even jobs because of a tweet exposing something.
Social media has grown, for those who are trying to control the fellas using it, you will not succeed. Word has it that the government has now hired black hat hackers to “Tame “ E-Activists. The fear of social media has smacked government officials and other institutions, now they are grappling to control it. They wont succeed- someone needs to tell them this rare truth. Why would anyone think of that in the first place?
Last week, a lady from Embu County was arrested and detained for speaking out on Facebook. Yes ! She complained about corruption and impunity within the county government of Embu. She was denied bail because she was dangerous . .. Maybe they didn’t want her to reveal more stuff.
It is sad that terrorism related suspects; murderers, armed robbers and land grabbers are released on bond but not social media users. That speaks volumes about our judicial system. While dangerous criminals are released of bond, to freely roam out there and maybe annihilate more people, social media users are denied bail… This has now become the precedent.
Online critics should not be victimized. The relevant authorities should learn to get views from social media and act on them. Opinion is opinion no matter how misled it is. I know some people will shrug off my accusations and say that “ That is up to people who use social media wrongly “ but your day is coming; Then you will remember what I said.
The precedent of jailing people incommunicado because of social media criticism has been set by Jubilee government. Embu county government has accused one Nancy for undermining authority using her Facebook account to raise important issues. She was arraigned in court and finned 30,000 shillings after denying posting the “Insulting “ messages. Martin Wambora did not survive impeachment to be this sensitive. Let him work and halt the habit of harassing people criticizing him.
