A resident of Ukunda, Diani, has accused Kenya Power of violating her rights by illegally disconnecting her power supply.
The source, who wishes to remain anonymous, claims that two men posing as Kenya Power employees came to her doorstep at Diani Beach Park Gate Number 5 Next to Pinewood, on Friday, February 10, 2022, and switched off her connection based on an inexistent bill.
“I was shocked when I saw the two men cutting my connection. I tried to explain to them that there was a mistake on the bill, but they wouldn’t listen. They just disconnected my power,” she wrote to us.
According to the victim, the alleged bill of Ksh12,849 was erroneous and the due date for disconnection was not until February 23rd, 2023. Despite her attempts to clear the matter with Kenya Power’s offices in Mombasa, the victim claims that her efforts have been in vain.
“I’ve tried to reach out to Kenya Power, but they won’t listen to me. I just want my power back on and this matter resolved. This is a violation of our rights. No one should have to go through what I am going through right now. Kenya Power needs to be held accountable for its actions,” said the victim.

She is now seeking to escalate the matter to the Stima Plaza headquarters in Nairobi hoping to find a resolution.
The disconnection of power supplies by Kenya Power has become a common issue in recent years, with many residents claiming that they have been disconnected unfairly.
The monopolistic power supplier has a responsibility to ensure that all disconnections are carried out in a fair, lawful manner and based on substantiated bills.
This latest incident raises questions about the management’s commitment to upholding these standards and calls for a full investigation into the matter.
It is quite unfortunate that the insatiable greed of the company’s managers has resulted in a disregard for the rights of innocent Kenyans.
It is time for Kenya Power to prioritize the needs of the people over its own profits.
The victim’s plea for help serves as a rallying cry for all Kenyans to stand up against such injustices and demand change.
