Nyeri county is bracing for a chaotic fight for the gubernatorial seat in 2022 with the growing list of controversial aspirants including Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua and Peter Munyiri who have announced their bids to unseat Mutahi Kahiga.
The long list also includes the Health cabinet minister Mutahi Kagwe who is secretly plotting be the next kingpin of Central Kenya after President Uhuru Kenyatta retires in 2022.
Kagwe who lost the Jubilee Party ticket to the late Wahome Gakuru is also competing with the former presidential aspirant and former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth for the kingpin title.
Gakuru won the seat on a Jubilee ticket died two months after the elections in a grisly road accident along Thika Road.
He became the second Nyeri governor to die in office with his demise creating room for his deputy Kahiga to rise to the top.
Mathira Mp Rigathi Gachagua has downplayed intentions to go for the seat that was once held by his brother but reliable sources have revealed that his intention to run will implicate things for the corrupt banker, Peter Munyiri.
Rigathi is a close ally of William Ruto who stands the chance to give other aspirants a run for their money with the DP going for the presidency in 2022.
The deputy president is currently enjoying massive support in Central Kenya meaning his candidates might scoop many seats.
Rigathi is as tainted as Munyiri.
In October 2020, the DCI had Rigathis bank accounts frozen as investigations into the Ksh12.5 billion scam intensified.
