Kenyan International Athlete Dies in Nyeri-Nyahururu Road Accident

Kenneth Muriithi Njiru, a Kenyan international athlete died in a road accident on the 7th of January 2020 along the Nyeri-Nyahururu road.

The celebrated athlete who worked with the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), Kenneth Muriithi Njiru, died on the spot after his saloon car got into an accident along Nyeri-Nyahururu road.

Kenneth Muriithi Njiru was headed towards Nyahururu Town when his saloon car collided head-on with a Toyota land cruiser that was ferrying tourists towards Nyeri town.

Three tourists were injured in the Nyeri-Nyahururu accident that claimed the life of Kenneth Muriithi Njiru and was admitted at the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital.

The three tourists who were injured and rushed to the Nyahururu County Referral Hospital are of Russian descent.

Kenneth Muriithi Njiru, the athlete, represented Kenya in the 2018’s 3000 steeplechases at the 21st  Africa senior athletics championships in Asaba, Nigeria.

Timon Odingo, the Nyandarua North police boss said that the athlete officer lost control of his car when he reached the Equator area leading to his saloon car to ramming into the land cruiser.

“The athlete’s vehicle lost control and drove in the wrong direction. The driver of the tourist vehicle tried to divert but they collided head-on,” Odingo added saying Kenneth Muriithi Njiru lost control around the Equator.

Odingo noted that Kenneth Muriithi Njiru, the athlete and KDF officer died on the spot while the tourists were rushed to the nearby Nyahurururu County Referral Hospital.

Odingo added that investigations had been launched on to what could have caused the road accident that claimed the life of the international athlete.

The body of Kenneth Muriithi Njiru, the athlete,was moved to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital mortuary while his car was ferried from the scene of the accident by a crane.

The death of Kenneth Muriithi Njiru following the road accident comes months since Kenya lost another athlete, Nicholas Bett, in another road accident in Nandi’s Sochoi near Lessos. May the soul of Kenneth Muriithi Njiru rest in peace.
