Abraham Kiptum, Kenya’s former marathon record holder has been handed a four year ban by the Athletics Integrity Unit for anti-doping violation.
AIU oversees integrity issues in international athletics, including doping. In april the body suspended Kiptum for violating Athlete Biological Passport. ABP usess blood tests to detect possibility of doping instead of specific substances.
The ban goes back to October 2018 from when he set new world record on half marathon in Valencia.
He thrashed Eriteria’s Zersenay Tedese’s mark in Lisbon 2010 by five seconds. Kiptum’s record was later broken by Geoffrey Kamworo by 17 seconds in Copenhagen in September.
The increasing numbers of doping in recent years is damaging the country’s pedigree in middles and long distance races.
