Following revelations that the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital had fallen into unhygienic conditions, the Governor Anne Waiguru has issued the following statement.
The statement which is dated 12th May, 2019 promises immediate action to salvage the situation at the hospital which has now become ground zero for Hepatitis B and Diarhoea.
PRESS STATEMENT BY H.E. ANNE WAIGURU, E.G.H., O.G.W., GOVERNOR KIRINYAGA COUNTY ON KERUGOYA COUNTY REFERRAL HOSPITAL
I have directed the County Secretary to constitute an emergency taskforce from the County Health, Transport & Public Works and Environment Departments to oversee the immediate cleanup of Kerugoya County Referral Hospital with immethate effect.
This taskforce is mandated to carry out the immediate re-deployment of manpower to clean up and maintain standards in hygiene, public health and safety at the hospital within the next 72 hours and provide a – comprehensive report on long term solutions within the next 14 days.
This taskforce will be chaired by the County Secretary and include: the Chief of Staff, County Executive Committee Members of Environment, Gender and Agriculture, Chief Officers from Health, Transport and Public Works and Directorates of Procurement and Communication.
I have further directed the Chief Officer for Transport and Public Works to ensure laundry services are restored immediately following the relocation caused by the on-going upgrading and construction work at the hospital.
With the recent upgrade of facilities and increased number of health services offered, the Kerugoya County Referral Hospital has witnessed an influx of more patients seeking treatment and has consequently been stretched beyond its capacity, putting pressure on its equipment and human resource capacity.
I have therefore requested for the immediate procurement of a new incinerator and request supplementary budget allocations to add more laundry machines to deal with the capacity issues occasioned by increased patient numbers at the facility.
Following the nomination of the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, I urge the County Assembly to expedite the vetting process to allow the immediate appointment of the CECM Health to enable efficient service delivery to Kirinyaga, residents.
Signed:
ANNE WAIGURU, E.G.H., O.G.W. GOVERNOR, KIRINYAGA COUNTY
