A Nairobi-based medical laboratory firm is accused of mistreating its staff that it sent to Mombasa to open a new branch.
According to one staffer, he was sent to the Mombasa branch to work as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in November.
In July 2022, after performing his duties diligently, he was illegally terminated.
“I was employed by Meditest Diagnostic Services to work in the Mombasa branch as Medical Laboratory Technologist. Last week 7/7/2022 my employment was terminated in an unusual and unprofessional way”, he wrote.
The reasons given did not add up according to him:
“They gave me a different reason with what is written in the Termination letter”, he said.
Adding that, “They gave me a termination letter just after asking my salary due to delay and instead of writing to me personally they send to my colleagues”.
The staff says he has a recording of the conversation where they were giving him different reasons and asking him ‘to understand’.
He has not received his salary till now.

“They decided to send me away just after the completion of the Diagnostic Centre which is ready to operate and I have managed everything. I mean the rooms were empty; I looked for the contractors, fundis, and site materials. I have been working out of my JOB DESCRIPTION (JD), and I have been working overtime without extra payment”, he complained.
“I have sacrificed my pocket in the facilitation of transport to different clients without their refund”
He shared documents and screenshots, which we have as evidence.
“I have every evidence against this inhumanity and unprofessional way of handling me. Today (weeks ago) they send some money to my account but they cancelled and told me to sign some papers which I didn’t. Please help me to get justice and my money”, he concluded.
According to Kenya Labor Laws, Meditest is trying to circumvent the laws that require it to pay its staff in case they declare redundancy.
It also seems to be illegally terminating a contract and they want an easy way by making sacked staff sign some shady papers.
There are four staff looking for the services of a lawyer to get justice.
