Nairobi – The Orange Democratic Movement ODM has moved its grassroots elections to August.
The party said Tuesday that it had been forced into the move due to the the fact some of its branches claimed they had not conducted civic education and needed time to do so.
The branches which requested for more time are from the north Eastern region which are predominantly Muslim and were fasting and observing the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
The branches are Wajir, Marsabit and Kilifi.
” They needed more time, which was a fair request in the current circumstances, ” Nancy Abisai of the ODM National Elections Board NEB said Tuesday.
Elections will now be held between August 20 and September 2 in Marsabit, Wajir, Kajiado, Migori, Kilifi and Vihiga, while in Nairobi, the exercise will be held from September 5 to 8.
The rest of the counties will go to the polls on a yet to be released date later on in the year.
ODM is seeking to register as many as 10 million members ahead of the 2017 General Elections which are nearing.
Party leader Raila Odinga has said that the party will not allow the polls to be disrupted like the national elections were earlier this year.
