At least one person lost their life while sixteen others were rushed to hospital on Monday evening following the collapse of a building in Mukuru slums.
The sad incident happened during a poorly carried out demolishing project by the Nairobi Metropolitan Services (NMS) to pave way for the expansion of feeder roads within the area.
The deceased was identified as Gabriel Ndotono Maina whose body has since been transferred to Chiromo mortuary.
Other injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
According to area MCA, Evans Otiso residents had been given a one day notice to vacate their structures ahead of the demolition.
“This is COVID times yet the government has come to demolish houses leaving hundreds of families homeless. They should have given us sufficient time,” James Mwaniki, a resident complained as he watched NMS bulldozers quickly turn what he previously called home into rubble.
As of the publishing of this update, no further fatalities had been reported.
