An employee of Opalnet Limited, the official distributor for LG in Kenya has written to this site’s chief editor asking for the workers’ grievances to be highlighted.
“Good evening Sir,
I want to bring to your attention this company called Opalnet Limited (official distributor for LG Kenya).
I have worked for them from 2015 and I have some issue to raise for them to be exposed and for Kenyans to know how these Indians mistreat Kenyans in our country.
1. Underpayment
Locals doing sales have been paid as low as Ksh. 20,000 for the past 3 years. In a month, you might make the company over 10 million shillings and yet only take home 20K. Drivers and cleaners receive less than 15K per month yet they work for a company as big as Opalnet LG. Sir, please forward this matter to the workers’ union so they can look into this matter. We are suffering a lot. These foreigners are underpaying us.
2. Tax Evasion
The company’s director Mr Rakesh has bribed as many KRA officials as possible to enable evade taxes. How will our country grow with these foreigners failing to pay taxes?
Thirdly, so many Indians have been employed without any knowledge. They come, we teach them, and then they are paid more than 100K yet some of them can’t construct a full sentence in English. Who is giving them entry permits? Kindly Sir, cc Matiang’i, COTU boss, KRA and all bodies dealing with workers’ rights and immigration. Fight for our rights!”
